TRAMWAY to WANGANUI HEADS.

At the meeting to promote formation of a company to construct a tramway from Wanganui to the river heads, about 50 persons attended. The proposed capital is £12,000 at £5, £4 paid up, and power to increase. Cost for permanent way, locomotives, rolling stock, cattle yard, goods shed, locomotive shed, and wharf were set down at £IO,OOO, and the estimated annual cost of maintenance, under the tables of the New Zealand Railway Department, distance 3£ miles, £6OO per annum. The estimated annual receipts are £1,892. It is expected that land through which the line will pass will be given to the Company, that on completion of the work the Union Company’s steamers will make Wanganui a regular port of call, and that the contemplated freezing works and the export cattle trade will be alone sufficient to justify the project. It was agreed that after 1,500 shares had been applied for the provisional directors should again meet to decide upon the route and other matters.
