The steamer Fanny has been got up and found to be quite uninjured. Rev. Mr Dasent will terminate his ministry in this district at the end of January, and will enter on his new duties at Karori, near Wellington. No provision is yet made for filling the curacy at Patea. The Mayor’s scheme of local works and loan of £5,000 for Patea borough is commented on favorably by ratepayers, so far as we have had opportunity of guagidg public opinion. William Stuart has been gazetted District Land Registrar at New Plymouth, Deputy Commissioner of Stamps ■ and Registrar of Joint Stock Companies. ’ A big reaper and binder trial is to be held at Christchurch about January 17, for which eight or ten machines are entered. Wire and twine binders will compete, a gold medal being given to the best in each class, and a certificate to the second best. . The Presbyterian school pic-nic was held yesterday, in the Patea Domain. Games, swings, and juvenile romps went on briskly, some members of the congregation attending at intervals. Tea and eatables were plentiful, and the tired youngsters were of opinion that ; they had a grand day altogether. Two medals are offered for rifle-firing. Mr Christie offers a gold medal for the highest aggregate scores in eight quar- : tprly competitions during two years. The medal is in form of a star, with ribbon land f claspS. Two small rifles in silver lie across the gold, star as a neat relief, and there is a suitable inscription. The medal is supplied by Mr Nutsford. Mr T. Hay wood-offers a silver'medal, and this may be a second prize in the same competitions. A ’ special Gazette , containing rules under the Election; Petitions Act of 1880 has been published.
