The R.M. Court had no business today. A Scheme for benefiting the borough of Patea, by exercising certain powers under the Municipal Corporations Act, is likely to take a practical form at an early date. A Report on tbe damage done to harbor reserves at Patea, by cutting them up with the railway line, is being prepared by Messrs Dale and Cowern for the Harbor Board. It is intended, we suppose, to make a claim on the good nature of Government for: some equivalent in land as compensation for the depreciation to harbor property. A Loan of five pounds, for borough improvement works in Patea, is to be submitted for approval at a public meeting of ratepayers to be held about five weeks hence. The Mayor’s interesting statement to the . Borough Council on this matter last night will be found in this issue. He is entitled to a compliment for the skill, and tact with which he expounded bis scheme. As to the merits of his proposal, opinions may differ on some details, and there is always a section in a community who are averse to borrowing. This kind of caution is healthy, and supplies a desirable check to those other speculative people who would rush ahead too fast. This' scheme seems to hit a fair medium.
