This Day. (PEU UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Personation. At the Supreme Court a true bill was found against the Hon. C. J. Pharazyn for personation, Sydenham Building Society Swindler. Christchurch.—ln Charter’s case, after the jury had returned a verdict of guilty, the Crown Prosecutor said, in reply to his Honor, that the cases of embezzling were only a few selected from many. Prisoner confessed the justice of the verdict, expressed satisfaction that he had been caught, and threw himself on the mercy of the Court, stating that he was only 26 years old and had a wife and fine young family. Sentenced to 4 years penal servitude. Fatal Fall. Timaru. A man named John Lawrie while standing on the edge of a cliff to the north of Timaru, was precipitated to the rocks beneath through the earth giving way, was seriously injured, and died shortly after his arrival at the Hospital. Man Drowned. Invercargill.

A sad accident occurred at the Bluff Regatta. The sea was very lumpy, and three outriggers capsized, with the result that one man named A. Robertson was drowned. Starch Factory Burnt. Dunedin.—Gibson’s starch and cornflour factory, on the Harbor terrace, was burned down yesterday. Origin of the fire is not known. The Fire Brigade saved the adjoining hotel. Robbery from Hotel. Dunedin.—An impudent robbery was committed on New Year’s morning at Watson’s hotel. A man went into, the room of a boarder who was asleep, and stole a watch and money. He went into another room and ransacked the pockets of the occupant, a sea-captain, but the latter awoke and ran after the thief. He was afterwards arrested, and committed for trial.
