FLOOD AND SERIOUS DAMAGE

AT WANGANUI,

(I’EK UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

A very heavy fresh in the river rose suddenly on Wednesday night, and carried away the punt containing a new steam crane which had just been made for use in connection with the dredge. The crane was seen going over the bar, and it is feared has capsized. A number of small boats were carried away. The boat-house staging was broken up, and other damage done. Later, this day.

The crane punt, which was carried out to sea by the fresh in the river yesterday, was found ashore at Kaitoke. The machinery was wrenched off the punt, and the punt now lies on shore, stove in. The crane is out in the surf, and if not raised within the next few days, will be irrecoverable, as it will be embedded in sand. It is a serious loss to the Harbor Board.
