BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL ,
People are again flocking to Hawera in crowds, for the purpose of securing a piece of land at the sale to be held on Thursday next. Yesterday the Land Office was thronged all day with eager applicants for deferred payment sections, all of which I believe were doubly applied for. The land to be sold is very good, somewhat heavy bush, but the soil is first-class, and I anticipate that the whole of it will fetch prices beyond the reserve. The sales of these lands are always advertised for the Land Office, Hawera, but Captain Wray has had in every instance to adjourn to the Town Hall, the Court House being so miserably small. I think, considering the vast amount of land revenue that is being derived from this district, the Government should supply adequate accommodation for the transaction of business, particularly in connection with Lands and Justice.
The County Council elections were very tame after the big one just passed. Very few, comparatively, voted, but notwithstanding a very good Council has been elected. The following are the names of the newly-elected Councillors :—Messrs Finlayson, Hunter, Partridge, Yorke, Livingston, Inkster, Marchant, and Godkin. The first meeting of the Council was called at the Institute yesterday, but owing probably to its only being published in that highly-interesting paper the Government Gazette , it was not noticed save by Messrs Livingstone and Partridge, who were the only ones in attendance. They adjourned until Saturday next, and in the meantime they have communicated with the Under-Secretary, asking advice regarding the peculiar position. I Hawera is making great strides at present in the way of building and local industries. In High street several large and handsome buildings are being erected, and the Bank of Australasia will be calling for tenders for their new premises very shortly. In Princes street we have the Union bank and a sash and door factory in course of erection, and Mr Pulford is calling for tenders for his new hotel, whilst cottages are going up all around ; still people cannot get house accommodation, but have to wait their turn.
