PATEA VOLUNTEERS.
The monthly inspection of the Patea Rifles took place last evening. There was a good muster, the corps being inspected by Captain Black. The company was pnt through the manual and bayonet exercises. Captain Black read a letter from Major Noake stating that an Easter encampment was to be held for all Volunteer corps between Patea and Foxton, to be held at a central position,—probably Westraere, near Wanganui. The troops would go into encampment on the Thursday before Easter, after which a review would be held, the encampment breaking up on Easter Monday. The Volunteers would get free railway passes. The cost per man for rations, &c., would be about Is 3d per day. The men were requested to make up their minds as to going or not by Tuesday next. The captain also read a letter from the Wanganui Rifle Association stating that they proposed offering a trophy, valued at £4O, to be fired for by representatives of any corps which subscribed £5 towards purchasing the trophy. If any corps subscribed that amount, and did not send representatives this year, they would be allowed to do so next year. It was decided to send a team from Patea Rifles. The firing for the McGuire cup takes place on Boxing-day, at the Waverley range. The cadets also paraded for inspection, the attendance being very meagre.
