The City of New York sailed from San Francisco November 21st, being delayed to wait for trains snowed up on Central Pacific railway. Jews fleeing from Russian and German persecution are finding their way in numbers to America. 160 arrived on 15th Nov., mostly agriculturists, and strong hardy men. A new form of distemper prevailing among horses at New York is puzzling the vets., many dying despite the utmost care. The Empress of Russia is enciente, and will probably be confined in May. The ceremony of coronation will therefore be hastened. The Pope and Cardinals have had the Irish question under consideration. Alexander Mitchell Moir, London merchant, failed for £61,000. The Marquis of Lome, replying to an address in London, said there was hardly one person in ten thousand in Canada who did not attach the utmost value to its imperial connection. The Princess Louise will accompany the Marquis to Canada five weeks hence. The Marquis resigns the GovernorGeneralship early in 1882. Morris defeated Hosier by 200 to 180 in the Cushion Camion Billiards Championship Tournament held in New York. Complete annihilation of the village of Elm, canton of Glares, appears to be only a question of time and bad weather. The summit of the peak nearest the village is moving. A despatch from Constantinople, Nov. 16, says 5,000 people are dying daily in Mecca from cholera. Steamers at Djeddah refuse to embark the returning pilgrims. Patti concert, New York, realised 4,000d01s for Michigan fire sufferers. The cost of the Tunisian expedition so far to France is over four million francs. The Berlin Press covers Gambetta’s new Ministry with ridicule and scorn. The priz-fighters, Holden and White have been arrested by the Sheriff of Ashtabula. In four rounds fought, White (American) was knocked down several times, and one eye partly closed. The English barque Bend Orr is reported to have sunk at sea. Crew taken off by the barque Law Wood, and brought to New York. Mr John Walter, of the Times , speaking in Berkshire, advised Englishmen to emigrate to America. They would be as likely to succeed there as men of any other nationality. A faint comet, in constellation Cassiopaca, has been discovered by Professor Swift of Heomer observatory, Washington. The ship Kidmardcn, coal-laden from Glasgow to San Francisco, has been burned at sea off the coast of Chili.
The consecration of the Catholic Church on Sunday by Bishop Redwood will be an interesting and imposing ceremony. Many visitors are expected, and the Catholic body on this coast are combining to make the event worthy of remembrance. Nolan & Coy’s stock sale at Hawcra to-morrow comprises nearly 300 head. The successful tenderers for building a rubble wall at the inner end of the Patea breakwater are M’Guiness and Regan, the prices being 7s 9d per cubic yard of wall, and 7d per yard excavation. These prices are considered very low. The Pilot reports : There is no alteration in bar and channel, both keeping to south-east of breakwater with a sharp turn round the east, and a vessel’s rudder requires to be assisted with trimming sails coming round this turn. The spit lowered a little about the middle of last month, so I was able to let vessels in at a straight run with a moderate tide, but it could not be attempted at neaps. I would request to be supplied with two flags, M. and W., for leading flags and boacons. Thirty-three vessels crossed the bar since last report. Two crossed at night.
