THE MAJOR and the CATHOLICS. When Major Atkinson was contesting the Egmont seat against Mr Sherwood, he was questioned at all his meetings as to his views on education, and invariably gave same answer, viz., that he could not interfere with the present system. At his Patea meeting he is reported by the Mail, which was then favoring his candidature, as follows : Mr F. O’S. McCarthy : Would you be inclined to give the Catholics a fair share of the grants set apart for educational purposes ?—Major Atkinson : I should not care to interfere with that part of the working of the Act.—Mr Adams : Would you be in favor of the Bible being read in schools? Major Atkinson : I would delegate that to committees. Individually, I am in favor of it ? Catholics of Egmont, compare the recent statements made by Major Atkinson with the above. —I am, &c,, Right-A bout-Face.
