A Close Contest.
The contest in Egmont district will be no child’s-play. We believe the Major will win, and we have become satisfied, on the whole facts, that he ought to win. But he will have to fight hard. Mr Hutchison is assured of considerable support on the Plains, and around Normanby. His supporters are also scattered leather thickly in other parts of the district. He can talk well, and his points tell on a platform. Then he has the peculiar advantage of having no political sins to atone for in the past, while of course he can appeal to no performances. The Catholic vote cannot be counted as assured to either party. It is likely to be freely divided, and we think this independence among Irish settlers is a most commendable quality. It is said that Mr Livingstone is using his influence at Hawera in favor of Mr Hutchison ; and at Patea Mr Sherwood appears to be working decidedly for the same candidate. In spite, of these and other opposition influences, and in spite of the speech last night, the Major will be member for Egmont.
