Rise in Wool. London, 26th. There are no further changes to report in colonial breadstuffs or tallow. At the wool auction to-day, 7,600 bales were offered, and a firm and active demand was again experienced as compared with rates ruling at the close o£ last sales. Prices: Fleece are fully l£d higher ; scoured is about Id higher; and greasy cross-breds are fd to Id higher.

Attempted Assassination.

St Petersburg, 26th. An attempt on the life of General Ignatieff, Minister of the Interior, was made in this city to-day, by a youth who fired at the General with a revolver. He was at once arrested, and has since confessed that he was instigated to commit the attempted crime.

IRISH LAND BUSINESS.

London, 26th. Owing to the continued increase of business brought before the Land Courts, three additional commissions have been appointed in Ireland to deal with cases under the Land Act.

Turkish War Debt.

Constantinople, 26. Negotiations are now proceeding between the Russian Ambassador and Ottoman the financial commission, with a view to arrive at an amicable arrangement regarding the payment of the war idemnity due by Turkey to Russia.

Fighting in Austria.

Vienna, 26th. The decision of the Government to place Bosnia under the Austrian system of military service, has caused great discontent among Bosnians, especially on the part of those resident in the district of Cattaro, on the Montenegrin frontier. The inhabitants of that district have risen in arras against the Austrian authorities, and severe fighting has already taken place between the insurgents and Austrian troops which were dispatched to Cattaro.

New Colonial Bank. Melbourne.

The prospectus has been issued of a new bank to be styled the Bank of Australia. The capital is to be one million. Mr Munro is the promoter.

N.Z. Ship Dismasted. London,26th.

The barque Pampero, 688 tons, bound from Liverpool to Port Chalmers, experienced severe gal© o£E the English Coast, during which she was dismasted. She has been towed into Penzance for repairs.

Underground Fire in Tasmania.

Hobart, Monday. Hundreds of people visited the scene of the fire which had been raging in the vicinity of Sray river since the extraordinary disturbance which occurred on Thursday last. Accounts which come to hand are most contradictory. The Mercury to-day expresses the belief that the fire is caused by burning peat-moss.
