The first train passed through St. Gothard Tunnel on 3rd November. The tunnel connects the railways that meet at Zurich on the Swiss side of the Alps with those of Italy, of which Milan is the centre. Its length is about 11 miles. The “Alliance” is the name of a new line of steamers to sail from London to Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney. The first ship will be despatched early in December, others to follow monthly.
