WELLINGTON-MANAWATU RAILWAY.
A Wellington journal referring to the contract entered into between the Government and the Wellington-Mana-watu Railway Company says Government have agreed not to require any security beyond an undertaking to expend £50,000 within the first year, being content beyond this to rely on the powers given by clause 123 of the BailWays Construction and Land Act. Five years is the time allowed the company to complete the line. The line will be 82 miles in length, and the value of the land to which the company is entitled is estimated at £123,000. It is stated that, a recent Government survey of the proposed main line through the Manawatu Gorge shows it can be completed for about £IO,OOO per mile, or £90,000 from Palmerston to Woodville. The distance from Napier to Wellington by this line will be 33 miles shorter than via Wairarapa. We understand that financial arrangements to enable the company to commence the work at once are likely to be completed in a few days.
