SECOND EDITION.

The following appeared in the 2nd edition of last issue. A tannery near New Plymouth is for sale. Tenders for constructing a rubble wall at the inner end of the Patea breakwater, are invited. Here is an election conundrum. Ratepayers outside the former town boundary of Patea voted in the municipal elections, when no new roll had been made to include the extended area ? If this was legal, let the same principle be applied to the County Council election. There the boundary between two Ridings was altered, but no new roll was made to enable the elections to be taken according to the altered area. Electors within one Riding have been allowed to vote in the other Riding, merely because no new roll was made. Now the conundrum is, which of these bodies has been legally elected ? In one case the electors were allowed to vote in the extended area. In the other case they were not allowed. The public don’t know whether the County Council or the Borough Council is legally elected. Clearly one or the other is not.
