WAVERLEY.
The Mail has over 90 subscribers between WhenuaTcura and Waitotara. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL , Monday. The nomination of candidates to represent the Waverley Hiding in the Patea County Council, resulted in the following gentlemen being nominated : Messrs Bridge, Taylor, Wilson, Aiken, Durie, and Fisher. There being one more than the required number, a poll will be held on Wednesday next. There will be polling booths at both Waitotara and Waverley, so that will have every opportunity of recording their votes. The Government have paid the promised subsidy of 10s in the pound on total amount of rate received for year ending March 31st, 1880, to the Wairoa Highway Board. This will be very acceptable to the Board, and should enable them to go in for a number of new works. We have at last got a surveyor at work taking the levels for the side walks in the main street. This being the first step towards the formation of the same, the new Town Board deserve a pat on the back for their energy in so soon taking the matter up. The excitement of the races being now over, things in general have assumed their usual quiet shape, most or the strange faces to be seen about the place last week having departed. A noticeable feature about our race meeting was the absence of the usual games, under and over, twirligigs, monkeys, and learned birds, these being put a stop to by the new gaming and lotteries bill, the only amusement being a shooting gallery and a set of skittles. # The cricket match married v. single took place on Saturday, and resulted m an easy victory for the single, the scores being : —First innings married, 12 ; second innings, 35. First innings single, thus leaving f to win. They were obtained with the loss of one wicket. A return match takes place on Saturday week, when no donbt the Benedicts will try hard to wipe off their defeat. The annual meeting was held in the evening, when the report and balance-sheet were read by the secretary, Mr Seed, showing a small credit balance. It was decided to postpone the election of officers till the next match, when they will be elected on the ground. A concert in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Church is, I believe, to take place shortly, though I have not heard of practice being yet commenced. A deplorable accident happened yesterday (Sunday). Captain Walkmton and his boy were bathing in a dam, when the boy got drowned. An inquest is to be held this afternoon. '
