BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL , The meeting called for the purpose pf considering what steps should be taken to get the township represented in the County Council at the forthcoming election, lapsed, only three attending. Very little interest is taken in the matter by the ratepayers generally. The news received on Saturday that To Whiti, Tohu, and Hiroki had been captured without resistance, gave the most general satisfaction. I suppose Hiroki will be at once tried for the murder of McLean. The forthcoming meeting of the Waverley-Waitotara Racing Club is looked forward to as the great event of next week, and should the weather hold up an excellent day’s sport will be had. The grand stand is now completed, and the committee may be congratulated on having been able to erect it. I am informed that the Government intend to commence the expenditure of the £ISOO grant for opening roads to the Momahaki block at an early date. Jt|s to be hoped they will not let the summer slip by without doing the work. A cricket match, Married v. Single, is arranged to take place on the reserve on Saturday next ; wickets pitched at 2 p.m. An interesting game is expected. The annual meeting will be held in the evening after the match. (Report of Highway Board held over.) Writs for the general election may be issued any moment, new that the Government have practically crashed the native difficulty for the present. Ministers may be expected to make the most of their success.
