Volunteering.
The usual monthly company parade of the Patea Rifle Volunteers was held last evening. There was a fair attendance of officers and men. The company were put through the usual exercises, after which Captain Black stated that Major Noake desired the Rifles to be, strengthened during the .present troubled state of the country. He hoped there would be a good response, and if any of those who joined the corps at the present time wished to remain in it after the difficulty was over, he would be thankful for their services. The captain then requested those wishing to join to come forward. About twenty responded, and after being sworn in, arms and accoutrements were served out. . . A parade i( without uniform) of the whole company was arranged for Friday evening, at the usual hour. The non-commissioned officers :were also ordered to parade on Saturday evening, and it is intended to hold regular parades for them. The men were informed that Captain Neill, of Wanganui had been appointed Adjutant for this district.
Lieutenant King reminded the men that the second competition for the officers’ medal takes place on Saturday, and hoped there would be a .larger number of competitors than last time.
A meeting to consider the formation of a Cavalry Corps will be held this evening.
