Special and Press Association. LATEST THIS DAY. Volcano or Landslip? (telegram from our correspondent.) Wellington. Dr Hector is of opinion that fisbures near West Wanganni referred to yesterday, and which are ascribed by those who have seen them to volcanic action, and probably will prove to be due to landslips. He does not think any eruption of volcanic matter has taken place, but that the disturbance is due to the generation of combustible gases in deposits of bituminous shale and iron pyrites, which are known to be extensive in the locality, and which have taken fire spontaneously. CRIMINAL CASES, WANGANUI. Wanganui. At the Wanganui Supreme Court, Henry Williams, for receiving stolen silver from the s.s. Stormbird, was sentenced to seven years’ penal servitude. John Smith, tor stealing a watch from the person of a sleeping man, was sentenced to eighteen months’ hard labor. NELSON VOLUNTEERS. Nelson. At the parade of Volunteers last night, about 130 men of the town corps were present, including the Naval Brigade. The men were examined by Dr Boor, 17 being rejected. It is expected that, with the country corps, at least 150 men will leave for Opunaki by the Hinemoa to-night. NEW PLYMOUTH. Yesterday afternoon a man named Carnall was run over by a trolly at the harbor works. Trolly nearly passed over man’s right leg. This morning a young man working
on the Goliah, slipped and fella distance of twenty feet. He dislocated his elbow aim fractured his wrists. AUCKLAND CATTLE MARKET(I3u Telegraph thin dag.) Rerauera ; Dairy and store cattle in less than average numbers, and good quality ; last week’s values fully sustained. Prices for Auckland fatted cattle ranged from 25s to 28s ; ship-borne, from 23s to 25s the 1001 bs. Fat sheep in less than usual supply and better worth than last week by about Iseach. Shorn sheep, 2£d, in their wool, 3£d the lb. Fat lambs numerous, but in good demand ; last week’s values fully'sustained. Prices for good quality' ranged from 12s te 16s each. Dairy' pigs of small and medium size in good demand, but large coarse pigs at nominal prices.
