Dr Hector is of opinion that fisbures near West Wanganni referred to yesterday, and which are ascribed by those who have seen them to volcanic action, and probably will prove to be due to landslips. He does not think any eruption of volcanic matter has taken place, but that the disturbance is due to the generation of combustible gases in deposits of bituminous shale and iron pyrites, which are known to be extensive in the locality, and which have taken fire spontaneously. CRIMINAL CASES, WANGANUI. Wanganui. At the Wanganui Supreme Court, Henry Williams, for receiving stolen silver from the s.s. Stormbird, was sentenced to seven years’ penal servitude. Dairy' pigs of small and medium size in good demand, but large coarse pigs at nominal prices.
