(per united press association,) Auckland, Oct. 16th. The City ol Sydney with the English mails left San Francisco on the 25th September, and arrived at Auckland at 6.30 this evening. Bonfires were lighted through a large portion of the North of Ireland as a mark of gratitude to Mr Gladstone for the Land Act. - The s.s, “ Raleigh,” formerly the “ Hauraki,” having had new engines fixed, and been converted from a paddle to a screw steamer, has commenced running between Wanganui and Onehunga, making Waitara a port of call. She is under the command of Captain Harvey. The inward ’Frisco Mail is expected in this district on Tuesday. The Harbor Board will meet to-morrow to consider a proposal .for building a protecting wall, under the boiling-down works. ‘ The Chairman has made some terms for raising a loan on the Board’s securities. We hear this will be opposed on the ground that tbe Board’s borrowing powers are limited to a certain sum, which cannot legally be exceeded until a proportion of the previous loan is paid off.
