PATEA COUNTY MAIL PUBLISHED Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Friday Evening, October 14.

The Mammoth Gift Show presented an amusing performance in Dale’s upper room, last evening. There was a fair attendance, and the audience appeared well satisfied with the programme. The first part- consisted of magic feats, entitled “ A trip to Fairyland.” and Mr Manning succeeded in keeping the audience interested and amused by his card, ring, handkerchief, and other tricks. Miss Amy Swanborough mystified the audience by her clever feats of clairvoyance, and well merited the applause accorded her. The second part of the entertainment was composed of ventriloquial feats by Mr Manning, who is no mean performer, and was appreciated by the assembly. The distribution of prizes then took place, and gifts to the number of about thirty were presented, consisting of meerchaum pipes, albums, pictures, sets of studs, and small useful articles. Taking the performance as a whole, it was worthy the liberal patronage accorded it.

The land sale at Hawera has been a marked success, in spite of the scare. We are informed that there is good prospect of a suitable cattle steamer being put on between Patea and Greymouth. v A few cargoes guaranteed would make the experiment a success. Farmers will learn more in a few days. Mr Cowern’s sale of long leases in Patea on Saturday will test the confidence of investors. The value of building sections in this port-town has been increasing rapidly ; and good business frontages are running up to prices which would have seemed fabulous three years ago. The stability of Patea port has been sufficiently tested. The breakwater stands remarkably well. The river entrance continues good, and is steadily deepening by the scour. The early removal of eel-weirs will assist that operation. The growth of the port-town is a Jarge help to the district, by providing increased facilities, by attracting capital, and by cheapening merchandise.

Major Atkinson is expected in the district next week.

Inward ’Frisco mail is due early next week.

Waverley R.M. Court is to be held the first Monday in each month.
