VOTES on the PLAINS.
Settlers who have recently come into this district, especially on the Plains, appear doubtful wdether they have been long enough in the Egmont electorate to entitle them to parliamentary franchise. Their position is this. Cash, buyers of sections of £SO annual value are entitled tu vote as soon as they become registered owners, and a residence in the district is not necessary.. All the holders of cash sections are voters, and it is their business to get registered by applying at any post office for a form, tilling it up, and posting it to
The Registrar Egmont Electoral District, New Plymouth. Mark the envelope thus: “ Claim for vote only,” and no postage will he required. The deferred payment holders are entitled only by residence within the district six months or more.. The electoral roll has to be finally made up 14 days before the writ of election ; so that any holder whose term of six months is not yet complete can put in his claim at any date before the roll is finally made up for the election. The date of closingthe roll may be announced. The fact that New Plymouth harbor rate is fixed permanently on the district, in open breach of a resolution of the House, is one strong reason for exercising a vote at the coming election. Another reason is the wretched bungling of the Native question, which threatens to continue unsettled for want of a hard head and a vigorous hand.
