MORE VOLUNTEERS.
(from our correspondent.) Manilla, This Day. At a public meeting held last night, over’ 120 settlers attended. Major Stapp, officer commanding the district,: was in the chair, and explained that he had been deputed by Government to organise Volunteer companies throughout the unsettled districts. He • read rules. and regulations for volunteers generally and stated that an Instructor would be sent up at once ; to put, men through their drill. s 38 wore sworn in* the company .being called the Waimate Vulunteirs. Mr W. O’Brien was elected captain. -,/ v 'i : The Cavalry business was gone into and 30 men were sworn in, ten applying for transfers from the Hawera corps. (Remainder of report held oyer.) Men are leaving work 6n J 'the Plains, and several settlers come in every night.
