Mr Cockburn’s creditors met again on Tuesday afternoon, to receive an offer of 15s in the pound, without outside guarantee. As it appeared the estate will realise twenty shillings in the pound, the sale of properties and plant was ordered to proceed. Fuller report held over.

Lydia Howardc Comic Opera Company will give two now performances in this district on their way south next week, as advertised. They are sure of a hearty welcome now that the Patea District knows their high quality as a comic opera troupe.

Mr Long, postmaster, has been laid up with measles a few days. He is progressing satisfactorily. Mr Robertshaw has arrived to manage the postal duties temporarily.

Kakararaea entertainment on Friday evening is anticipated with unusual interest. Friends from Manutahi and Waverley are expected. The Garrick Club will have a final rehearsal on Thursday.

Lengthy reports of local meetings prevent some other matters appearing in this issue.

Woodville settlers believe they have been treated unreasonably by the Education Board, and are seeking redress. So far as the Mail can put their case in a proper light, it shall be done. A well written letter appears in this issue.

The meeting of T. Rogers’s creditors, called for Tuesday, lapsed through nonat tendance. Mr Skeet, dentist, will visit Patea next week, as advertised. The County Council met to-day, and the business will be reported in next issue. Notice of motion has been given in Parliament to oppose the granting of Hawera petition for a separate County. This was stated at the Council meeting to-day by the Chairman. The petition would be assented to pro forma, unless both Houses passed resolutions disallowing the same. It remains to bo seen whether this notice of opposition will be supported by a majority, or otherwise.

A reporter who had escaped from a fighting crowd said there was too much “ missileaneous matter ” in the affair to suit him.
