HAWERA.
The Mail, has over 90 subscribers between Manutahi and Stratford. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL , Friday. A great many persons are travelling up the Coast to look at the land at Rahotu, to be sold next Monday at New Plymouth. It requires careful inspection, as the sections vary much in quality. It is thought that the majority will be taken up at the first sale. Building is taking a fresh start in Hawera. Mr Wright, of New Plymouth, is about putting up a two-storey shop in High-street, the Union Bank have plans out for their premises, and I hear of two other large premises likely shortly to be commenced. The great drawback hitherto has been the difficulty of getting timber, in consequence of the obstacles put in the way by the railway authorities at New Plymouth. Strangers coming to Hawera during the last six weeks are surprised at the bad state of the roads in and about Hawera. mud up to one’s knees meets one on every side. It will be a great boon when the town becomes a borough, as they will then have some money to spend on the improvement of the town. At present the amount collected from rates will not allow of any permanent works being done.
