THE BLACK BIRCH FOREST, N.Z.

Thb inexhaustible scenic resources of the Otira track, between Christchurch and Hokitika, New Zealand, afford many subjects for the pencil of an artist. On this page we give a picturesque view in the Black Birch Forest, Otira Gorge. The black birch is a robust native tree, and abounds all through the Middle Island. Our sketch is taken in a grove, having a rich alluvial soil, thickly timbered by birch trees, ferns, and shrubs, but these must ere long disappear before the axe of the selector.
