WAVERLEY.

The Mail has over 90 subscrbcrs between Whenuakura and Waitotara. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Monday Evening. A shooting match is I believe arranged to take place between the Wairoa Light Horse and the Waverley Rifles at an early date, the day not being yet fixed. This should put a little life into the volunteer movement in this district. It is a pity to see such little interest taken in volunteering, but with the little encouragement from the powers that be, it is not be wondered at. A very handsome present in the shape of a clock and coat of arms has been made to the Waverley Town Hall by Mr D. H» Williamson. This will be a very useful addition to the Hall, and will add still further to the appearance of the interior. I think we can boast of having the best Hall on the Coast. The Hall was well filled on Saturday afternoon, there being quite a torn out of both lady and gentleman linkers. This popular amusement is becoming quite a rago, and while affording recreation will materially assist the funds of the Town Hall. The demand for properties is this district is still on the increase, Mr Wilson Milne’s farm having just changed hands at a satisfactory figure. I paid a visit to the “ valley of dry bones” on Mr J. Aiken’s farm the other day. In a bush gully near the Momahaki arc to be seen numbers of human skulls and bones of all sizes, evidently Maori remains. None of the natives about the district can account for them being there. It looks as if there must have been a big fight, or a massacre of prisoners perhaps there in the olden time.
