LAND CLAIMS OF DISCHARGED SOLDIERS.

In reference to petition from discharged soldiers claiming land, presented by Mr Ballanee to the Assembly, Mr Bunny, chairman of the Waste Lands Committee, has been directed to report “ that with reference to a large number of petitions which have been referred to the Committee, and which relate to alleged grievances and land claims of long standing, that a proper investigation into such claims and grievances involves an amount of research which it is impossible for the Committee to carry out. The Committee is of opinion that all such petitions arising out of circumstances which have occurred prior to the commencement of the present Parliament should be enquired into by the Government during the recess.” In reply to a question in the Assembly referring to the report from the Waste Lands Committee, reply was given by a member of the Ministry that he had not had an opportunity of discussing the question with his colleagues, but his opinion was that a Conrt or Eoyal Commission should sit, with power to take evidence on oath and enquire into the circumstances of each case.
