WAVERLEY.
The Mail has over 90 subserbers between Whenuahura and Waitotara. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Wednesday Evening. The Wavcrley-Waitotara Racing Club have decided on calling for tenders for the erection of a grand stand and saddling paddock ; also the formation of a lawn on the Racecourse, and intend proceeding with the work at once. The want of a grand stand has always been felt at the race meetings, the temporary structures hitherto used not affording sufficient accommodation for the large number of spectators who usually attend the Waverley race meetings. The formation of a lawn also, which will be both useful and ornamental, will reflect great credit on the committee of management. A large number of new members have joined lately, and the club is thriving wonderfully well. The Domain Board has not yet succeeded in obtaining the necessary Order in Council in the matter of leasing the Town Belt. This matter seems to take a considerable time to get arranged ; possibly the press of Parliamentary business prevents the Government from attending to such trivial matters. I notice a letter in your issue of Tuesday last re the Waverley Cemetery. I think with “ Visitor ” that if there is a sum lying idle in the hands of the trustees, some improvements should be made. I believe a sura was paid by Government as compensation for part of the reserve taken for railway purposes. This alone would go a little way towards themecessary improvements. The excitement about County Representation has pretty well cooled down now. I don’t think, however, that the decision of the meeting can be put down to jealousy on the part of the Waverley electors. They have had very little to complain of in their representatives so far, and no doubt weighed the matter carefully before arriving at the decision they did ; and because one or two of our residents who are usually to the fore in public matters differ from the remainder, it by no means follows that they are right and the whole of the others wrong. The proof of the pudding, however, is in the eating, and if the Waverley electors have swallowed what will disagree with them they will receive their punishment hereafter. I see we are to be honored with a visit from Madame Lotti Wihnot, who lectures in the Town Hall on Monday next, on that interesting subject “Courtship and Marriage.” The subject, -however, is almost an unknown one in this district, so no doubt it will “ take.”
