RUN DOWN.

On Wednesday evening, the 20th, I was leaving Manutahi for Kakaratnea, and when near to the residence of Mr J. Burke, I heard and then saw in the dusk a horse galloping madly with its rider towards me. I being well on the near side at the time, and going at a slow pace, endeavored to pull closer to the near side, when the galloping horse’s shoulder struck my right leg, throwing me violently from my saddle; but, clinging to my horse’s neck, I managed to save myself from going violently on the road. I thought my leg was smashed, for the pain was intense, and then numbness took its place, I managed to get home, but have been confined to my room ever since. I should think the horse was going at the rate of 12 or 14 miles per hour. The rider reminded me very much of the Murilla steamer in the English Channel running into the ill-fated North Fleet, and then making its escape, leaving the sufferer to live or perish. R. S., Kakaratnea.
