POLITICAL GOSSIP.
(BY TKLEGBAPH.) FROM OUR PARLIAMENTARY CORRESPONDENT. Wellington, Monday. Owing to the absence of Messrs Finn, Pyke, ami Driver, who are staunch members of the Opposition party, the debate will not clqse until their arrival. Ministers now claim to have a probable majority of four, while the Opposition say the voting will be even if all members record their votes. About a dozen members express intention to speak, and the debate will be resumed to-morrow. The division may not be taken till Wednesday or Thursday. CUSTOMS FALLING OFF. The Customs revenue shows a falling off to the extent of £SOOO as compared with the Jane quarter of last year. SLIPS ON RAILWAY. Owing to land-slips in cuttings on the Rimutaka mountain line of railway, caused by rains, passengers are obliged to get out and walk 100 yards. FLOODING. A house in Webb-street, Wellington, collapsed to-day, through inundations made by rain. Other tenements in the same locality are in danger. ARRIVAL OF MAIL. The Hawea, with the ’Frisco mail, left Onehnnga this morning. She brings no news of importance. SYMPATHY WITH IRELAND. A meeting to express sympathy with tenant farmers in Ireland, and with the Irish Land League, is convened in Wellington for next Monday evening. Sir G. Grey and Mr Sheehan are invited to give addresses.
