POLITICAL GOSSIP.
Wellington, Friday. The Legislative Council have passed a motion by a majority of two in favor of Bible reading in schools. DEBATE-CLOSE DIVISION. General business is suspended in Lower House until this debate is disposed of. A change is taking piace in the state of parties. Saunders, Weston, and others who disapprove of Government policy have announced they will vote against Mr Ormond’s amendment rather than put in Grey by their votes. .Government whips now announce a safe majority of two. Ormond professes to be anxious not to defeat Ministers, but to prevent their policy from being carried into effect. The Premier’s speech last night was very effective, and damaging to Opposition. Grey’s speech was given in bad humor and taste. To-day the debate was resumed by Mr Gibbs, who talked to empty benches. Mr Reid approved of the Government policy, but would vote against them through their neglect of goldfields. When the House rose this afternoon the Government whips were in high glee, stating that several doubtful members had declared for the Government. The debate will last by general consent until Tuesday night.
