LAND WANTED.

What amount of land is available in this district for sale and settlement ? The West Coast Land Commissioner has made a return to Government of the acres not yet opened in the several Boad Districts, as follow:

These figures are approximate estimates. They show that about 65,000 acres are lying unopened close to Patea township; that 66,000 acres in the Wairoa district remain to be put in the market, making together about 130,000 near this seaport ; besides 34,000 near Hawera, and over 200,000 in districts outside the boundaries of Road Boards. Native reserves are separate blocks, and may be also leased when adjoining Crown lands are settled. Beyond all this, there are immense tracts lying behind the Patea frontier and beyond the County inland boundary on the map; tracts that may prove to be as excellent as they are extensive, when thoroughly prospected. That farther inland area beyond the County boundary is as much a part of the Patea seaport district as is Whakamara or Momahaki. Indeed this vast inland area is the natural feeding-ground for Patea port. But what the townspeople want first of all is to have the land most come-at-able put first into the market; and then work the back country.
