THE MAORI KING DECLARES FOR PEACE.
The Government have received the following telegram from Major Mair, the Government agent at Alexandra, Waikato ;—“ Tawhiao, Waknnini, Manuhiri, and a number of other chiefs came in at three o’clock. Tawhiao ordered 80 guns to be laid down before me, and Waknnui said that this was an offering in the name of peace. I responded that on behalf of the Government I accepted the guns in the same spirit, and said all people would be satisfied of the genuineness of Tawhiao’s declaration, that there would not be any more trouble.”
