IN THE HOUSE.

FROM OUR PARLIAMENTARY CORRESPONDENT, Wellington, Wednesday. . RIVAL SCHEMES. The talk of the lobbies to-day is the speeches of Major Atkinson and Sir G. Grey on Local Government. The general opinion is that Grey’s scheme is wild and impracticable, but at the same time the Government proposals are looked on as containing nothing new, and they do not meet with much approval. BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. Mr Stewart presented a petition from the Moderator of the Dunedin Presbytery, in favor of Bible-reading in Government schools. REDISTRIBUTION OF SEATS. In the Representation Bill, the Government propose that for one member in town districts the quota of population shall be 6,661, and for country districts 4,996. It is probable that air additional member will be given for the North Island by dividing the East Coast district. What change may bo intended for the West Coast is not yet known. QUARANTINE. It is proposed to quarantine the Detached Squadron expected at Auckland from Sydney, for five days. REMOVING THE CENTRE. On Thursday week Mr Andrews will propose that the next meeting of Parliament shall be held at Christchurch, and that provision be made in the estimates to carry out the resolution.
