The House has been all the afternoon in committee discussing the Regulation of Elections BillThe only important alteration was excising that portion of clause empowering Government; to proclaim polling booths outside of an electoral district. . Owing to recent defeats., of Government,; the whips are now more busily engaged in keeping their parties in hand. Mr Beethami acts - for Government, and Mr Speight for the Opposition. Political news is dull. Three schemes for local government are now before the House, bdt the details remain to be explained.. Sir Gem Grey has fixed next Thursday for. the fir£t| reading of his ‘ bill dii.'the.;subject' Mr Ormond has a- plan, -which he |i4 holding in , reserve, for a' revived pror vincialism.Major’s.Atkinson’s scheme is jiot expected till' after the Financial Statement, , . * : I
