IMPROVING TRADE.
Mr Joseph Nathan, the newly elected president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce at the quarterly meeting lately held, in proof; of the improved condition of the colony, quoted from statistics of imports and exports showing the gradual increase of the latter, and said—ln the year ending March 81, 1881, the imports were £6,372,912 and the exports £6,203,973, thus showing imports valued at £168,939 only in excess of exports, being but about 2 2-3 rd per cent. Now, gentlemen, I think it is a very great satisfaction to find this great change and improvement in our position.. To my mind this speaks volumes in our favor as a commercial community ; it shows so clearly that we have realised and overcome the difficulties we were suffering from in former years, and it is still further a matter for congratulation that this position has not been brought about by any spasmodic effort, but by finding good markets for our staple products and the enhanced value of the same.
