WAVERLEY.
The Mail has over 90 subserbers between Whennakura and Waitotara. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Monday Evening. A meeting of the Committee of the Recreation Ground was held on Saturday evening to open tenders for fencing, &c. Thstender of S. Duffy, at 7s 6d .per chain, was accepted. , The Town Hall was well filled on Friday evening, in spite of the boisterous weather, and Hie Committee of the Quadrille Assemblies may be congratulated on the success of their efforts to provide amusement. The usual time of 12 o’clock brought the dancing to a close. A very severe shock of earthquake was felt here; at 5-16- on Sunday' morning, but I have not heard of any great damage being done, except the scaring of a few of the residents, who, I am informed, jumped up and hid under the bedsteads, thinking the end of all things wad approaching. I sec it was stated in the House, in the debate on Local Bodies Valuations, that it was decided by the Court of Appeal that where County Councils and Road Boards existed together, the County Councils had no right to rate. This, it strikes me, is a rather surprising decision, and will cause a little confusion in future.
