FROZEN MEAT.

At a meeting in Wellington on Friday, a committee of persons interested in shipping frozen meat to England, resolved—That the Government should he asked to instruct their sheep and cattle inspectors throughout the colony to provide the following information : The number of fat stock in each district; the number of fat stock exported ; the probable increase that may be expected within two years from date ; the number of stock boiled down; and the local consumption. The prospectus of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Limited, has been issued with a view to perfect the arrangements for the exportation of meat, butter, cheese, and other products treated by this process. The proposed head-quarters are Dunedin, the directory to consist of twenty-six men of wealth and standing in Otago, known throughout the colony, interested in the export of meat and produce, and whose names would be a guarantee of honest intention. The New Zealand Shipping Company will be prepared to carry frozen meat in properly fitted vessels, as soon as companies have been formed and are able to supply it. Arrivals at English ports from New York have been as many as ten steamers in one week, carrying 10,646 quarters of beef, and 3328 carcases of mutton, which shows the magnitude of the trade across the Atlantic. Australia can undersell America by a fraction of over a penny per pound. America would, therefore, be the first to suffer from close competition and a consequent fall in prices, which would follow regular exportation from the Australasian colonies. -
