THE TIMARU BREAKWATER.
A Canterbury journal says-—The great advantage of this breakwater, as a means of sheltering vessels from the violence of a heavy sea, is now demonstrated. A few days ago there was a terrific sea running in the roadstead, and it was a grand sight to see the immense waves breaking over the harbour works. Doubt was expressed by some as to whether the loose blocks of the recently constructed portion would withstand the violence of the storm, as they had not been bound together by the top monolith. An examination afterwards showed that not a single block had been moved. The work is undoubtedly a great success. During the storm the schooner Young Dick and the brigantines Eliza Mary and Enterprise were moored inside the breakwater, and they lay as snugly as if they had been in dock.
