MUSIC IN PATEA.

Sir, —What is the meaning of that Patea music “ local ”in a Wanganui paper? It seems to bint that music in Patea is going to the dogs because two ladies, who are probably related to the sapient correspondent, have declined to take leading parts in the next Harmonic concert. Your critical remarks in the Mail have terrified these ladies out of their lives ; for we have it on the correspondent’s authority that they have ref used to take, solo parts. My distress on reading this has been relieved by an assurance that these terrified ladies have not as yet been asked to take solo parts. Their fright is too early. Ho ladies have refused solo parts for the next concert.

One Who Knows

CLUB LIQUOR.

Sir, —What are the publicans flunking about? for I notice that a club has been formed in Patea, that meetings are being held in Mr Barker’s rooms, and liquor is supplied without a license. Thinking this an injustice to publicans, for their information 1 would quote clause 61 of the Taranaki Licensing Ordinance, which says: “The delivery of any liquor either by the owner or occupier, or by his servant or other person in the house or place, shall be deemed to be sufficient prima facie evidence of money or other consideration having been given or promised for such liquor so as to support a conviction, unless proof to the contrary be given to the satisfaction of the Court. , ’ There is no such thing as a club license in Taranaki province. I believe there is a society of Licensed Victuallers in Patea County, and should certainly think them asleep not to stir In Ihe matter. This seems also to be a proper subject for police inquiry.—Yours, &c., Observer.
