WAVERLEY.

The Mail has over 90 suhserbers between Whenuahura and Waitotara. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Monday’ Evening. The Volunteers held their parade on Saturday, there being, however, a very poor turn out. The Rifles held their annual meeting after the parade to elect committee, receive balance sheet, &c., after which the capitation money’ was paid to those members who were efficient. The meeting to protest against the dog tax was held on Saturday evening, in the Town Hall. Mr A. Howie was called to the chair. Several speakers addressed the meeting, pointing out the injustice of the tax, after which some resolutions were carried bearing on the subject with a view to getting the Government to amend the Act. The Mutual Improvement Society held their fortnightly meeting on Thursday. Mr Scott’s essay on “ The Rotation of Cropping, as adapted to the Waverley district,” brought out several speakers, who expounded their views-on the question, and an interesting discussion took place. Mr C. Dempsey’s sale of furniture, advertised for Thursday, fell through, the auctioneer, Mr F. R. Jackson, refusing to proceed with the sale, in consequence of interruptions made by the owner of the goods, who seemed to think he ought to have more to say’ in the matter than the auctioneer. The first batch of Parliamentary papers have just arrived for the Waverley Institute. Some interesting information can be gleaned from these. I see there is some prospect of a subsidy for Public Libraries again, and hope the £6OOO vote will be carried. There was some talk a short time ago of converting the old Town Hall here into a Reading Room, the only apparent difficulty being the want of funds to pay expenses. Should the Library grant be carried, however, we may expect to be able to manage matters. The want of a Reading Room at Waverley is much felt, and would be a boon to the district; and with a few alterations and improvements, the old Town Hall would answer the purpose admirably’.
