Last night’s cables report : Small pox increasing at Sydney. Two fresh cases reported, and rigorous measures adopted to arrest the disease. People much alarmed. American wheat crops very backward. Tenders in London for the Otago Harbor Works Loan of £IO,OOO amount to over £200,000. Tenders at £lO5 Is and upwards will receive allotment in full. The House of Commons has re-affirmed the principle of local option in connection with licensing, by a majority of 42. Bill for closing public-houses on Sunday in Wales passed third reading. At Melbourne, the Beform Bill has at length passed the Lower House. The Upper jiouse also passed it without discussion through all stages. So ends along struggle. At London wool sales on Thursday, 16,000 bales were catalogued. A firmer demand was experienced. Prices for greasy wool are about 4d higher titan last sales. Greasy cross-bred's and coarse wools rule about the same prices as at last sales. Ascot Gold Cup was run on Thursday. Robert the Devil 1, Petronel 2, Exeter 3.
