MARKETS.

TARANAKI CATTLE MARKET. Mr Newton King, of New Plymouth, reports : I held ray first sale at Inglewood on Tuesday last, and was] well pleased with the attendance of farmers, although bidding was very slack, and very few cattle yarded. The following were sold : 3 big calves, £2 5s ; 13 do, £1 19s ; 1 cow, £5 5s ; 1 filly £l3. WELLINGTON GRAIN MARKET. Tim N.Z. Times of June 10 reports— No transactions of any magnitude have come under our notice. Sales have been for actual requirements and not of a speculative character (except in grain). Oats have had considerable attention, and still have a hardening tendency ; the highest price that has transpired was 2s 6d for a 1600 bushel parcel, and as these are purchased to sell in this market, we may safely predict 3s for moderate sized parcels. Consequent on the rise in oats oatmeal has advanced, and holders are now very firm at £l2 to £l2 10s per tonMaize is higher, and 4s was freely paid. While quoting maize it may be interesting to our readers to learn that experiments have been made in “ America ” (and attracting considerable attention in Victoria) with highly satisfactory results, that sugar can be manufactured from maize and sorghum, as the former can be grown in almost any part of New Zealand. This is a most valuable discovery. Wheat is still quoted at 3s lOd. Flour is unaltered ; the local mill quotes nominally £lO 10s, although we hear of sales a shade under.
