THE HIKURANGI MAORI MEETING.
The meeting at Hiknrangi concluded on the 24th May with a general halca, the Kingites being especially satisfied with the result. All the tribes assembled acknowledged Tawhiao as King ; those that had any land left, and others that had disposed of theirs, acknowledging his authority, and giving themselves and belongings over to him absolutely. No Government money, as Manuhiri’s pension and others, is to be received by them directly. Those receiving moneys from leased lands will no longer receive the rents. The native ministers of religion will not receive their salaries from Europeans. All these matters are to be left to Tawhiao’s decision, who will consult with his advisers how they are to be settled. If not able to support a Press of their own, someone will be appointed by Tawhiao to represent, them in the European Press, Te Wheoro will represent the Kingites in the House of Representatives. He goes in entirely Hauhau interests. All the tribes are to be as Hauhaus. Even the Ngapnhis have handed over themselves to Tawhino’s jurisdiction. A proclamation will shortly be made by Tawhiao to the Press, showing the result of the meeting. Flour-mills are to be built, and clothing manufactured.
Since the conclusion of the Hikurangi meeting Tawhiao has visited Te Wheoro at Puniu with a number of his people. Wahanui was also down to fetch the printing press from Kopua to Hikurangi to start a newspaper.
Mr John Morgan has informed the Wanganui Herald that two comets are distinctly visible in the morning first before daybreak. One is in the west and the other to the south. Our poor hemisphere is thus between two fires.
