COUNTY NEWS.

A strange story is reported in the Sydney papers. A Dr Scheutte was consulted about what was supposed to be a tumor. He wrote to Dr Warren recommending that the female patient should be admitted into the Benevolent Asylum, as she was suffering from extra-uterine pregnancy, and the Csesarian operation should be performed. This terrible and almost invariably fatal operation was done by Dr Warren, assisted by Dr Scheutte (with instruments borrowed from the Sydney Infirmary), in the presence of a number of other doctors who, however, had not examined the case and had no responsibility in the matter. Both mother and child died within 24 hours. It is now acknowledged that the dreadful operation was wholly unnecessary, and that the woman’s condition was not at all what the doctors supposed. The case has been brought before the N.S.W. Parliament and an investigation ordered, and a report will be submitted to the Ministry at an early date.

Wanganui laments that its gaol is being emptied, because when the gaol is full, Wanganui is the capital of the West Coast. This is a sort of gaol fever. New Commissioners fer the Fatea East Road Board are elected, as advertised. The additional candidates who did not succeed were H. P. Turner 22, * and J. Nicholson 20. * The G.S. Hinemoa arrived in the roadstead at New Plymouth on Saturday, having called at Opunake and landed the released natives from Dunedin. She took a consignment of new carbines and stores for the A.C. Force. The Hawera Court will be called upon on Thursday to adjudicate upon a threat by a contractor to do personal injury to a late member of the Ngaire Road Board for complaining about the manner in which certain work had been done. The numerous friends and acquaintances of Mr Thos Farrah will be pleased to learn that after his extended travels to.China, India, Java, Malacca, and other places he has now returned to this district safe and well; and at the pressing request of many friends, he will at some future date deliver a lecture on the subject of his peregrinations. Mr Farrah is now canvassing as agent for the Australian Mutual Provident Society, and being well known he will doubtless succeed in “ taking many lives.” Among the 61 new Justices of the Peace are Messrs R. C. Tennent, Patea; G. S. Bridge, Waverley ; H. H. BeetHam, Wairarapa; W. Christie, Wellington, (brother to H. F. Christie, Patea); Arthur Hume, Wellington; E. W. Mills, Wellington; E. The Municipality Committtee reported last night to the Town Board, to the effect that the proposed area of the Patea Borough now contains more than the required 250 houses, aud that a petition as per draft be circulated immediately for the signature of householders, to be forwarded to the Governor at an early date. The report was adopted unanimously, and some enthusiastic words were said as to “going in’* vigorously for making the new borough worthy of its great destiny, etcetera. It was hoped also that the new Lord Mayor will rise to the greatness of the occasion. A political address is to.be given by Mr Sherwood next Monday, in reference to Major Atkinson’s representation of this district in the past. This event was expected to come off some weeks since, but the Town Hall being then in process of removal caused a postponement of the address. There is an expectation of lively hitting, as Mr J Sherwood is known to have been ransacking various political records for evi- - ~ dence on which to arraign the sitting member on the general results of bis representation of the district, and on particular points of policy as to native affairs, as to votes for Coast Railway, and so on. The opening of Parliament on Thursday will give to politics an absorbing interest for some weeks.
