KAKARAMEA.
(from our correspondent.) Friday Evening. The Town Hall Committee held a meeting on Wednesday last. Present, Messrs Mcßae (in the chair), Baggett, Brown, Hunter, Hansen, and Wilson. It was resolved to give a variety entertainment and dance in aid of'the funds of the building ; and a sub-committee having been formed to carry out arrangements, the meeting adjourned to Saturday. A piano has been kindly promised, and it is hoped that the ladies of the district who have generously provided refreshments for similar entertainments, will again lend a helping hand. It is likely a fortnightly dance will be got up during the winter months, to x-elieve the monotony of winter evenings. Sheep pens &c., are being added to Mr Jackson’s sale yards. The enlargement of the hotel is being proceeded with rapidly, and it is just possible this will be completed before our railway station is built. Kakaramea bids fair to become a second Cincinatti in the hog-curing way. Numbers of these animals are daily slaughtered at Mr Mcßae’s boling-down works for being coverted into bacon.
ANOTHER LAND SALE. Marton, 2nd. Sir Win. Fox, in addressing his constituents last night, said another block of land near Waimate will be ready for sale in a fortnight. He spoke favorably of the West Coast Railway to Wellington.
RAILWAY SHARES SUBSCRIBED. Wellington, Friday. It is believed all the share capital for the West Coast Railway, Poxton to Wellington is subscribed. All the returns from agents are not received, but about £50,000 of shares are taken up. Shares will be allotted on Monday.
TRYING the ELECTRIC LIGHT. Christchurch, Friday. A number of gentlemen in Christchurch are now in communication with the patentee of the Edison Electric Light with a view to the formation of a company to supply Christchurch with the electric light.
ADMITTING NUNS. Wanganui, Friday. Four nuns of the St. Joseph sisterhood were admitted by Bishop Redwood last night as novices of the order for twelve months, after which they may take a vow of two years, and then a longer vow, till they take the veil irrevocably.
