WAVERLEY.

Friday evening. A foot race took place on Thursday, on the Waverley cricket ground, for £2O a-side, between two well-known runners, Messrs G. Norgate and H. Lynch. The distance was 220 yards, Lynch receiving 10 yards start. The match was won by Lynch by about 8 yards. The start was effected in good style, Norgate gaining on his opponent gradually up to about 150 yards, but fell off again towards the close. The township was quite deserted on the Queen’s Birthday, the Wanganui steeplechase and the exhibition inducing numbers to take advantage of the single fares charged by the railway department, while others spent their holiday in pursuit of game.

The firing match between the Wairoa Light Horse and the Wanganui Alexandra Troop was won by the Wanganui men by by a few points, both teams making a very good average.
