MARKETS.

CANTERBURY STOCK REPORT, (From Canterbury Times.')

At the Addington yards on the 18th May there was a large attendance, and the bidding for fat and store sheep was remarkably brisk. The supply of fat cattle was very large, but the biddings for this description were remarkably dull, and sellers had to submit to a drop in prices as compared with late sales. .In store cattle there was very little business doing; in fact, only one or two pens changed hands by auction. Later in the day, however, we heard of several lots being disposed of privately. The stock yarded comprised 5,300 sheep, 320 head of cattle, and 403 pigs. Sheep. —The quality of the sheep was exceedingly good when compared with that yarded for some weeks past. Prime quality cross-breds realised from 18s to 21s each ; good ditto, from 13s to 17s ; medium from 10s to 11s 6d. Prime merinos brought 12s 6d ; store merino ewes (broken mouthed), from 4s 3d to 4s 6d ; ditto wethers, 6s 6d. We quote 2Jd per lb as an average for mutton. Cattle. —Prime bullocks sold up to £8 10s ; second quality were dull of sale, and many lots were passed in unsold. Three-year-old store steers sold at £5 5s ; calves, from 32s to 355. Pigs. —Owing to a very large supply of pigs there was a further drop in prices, and many lots were difficult to dispose of. CANTERBURY GRAIN & PRODUCE. (From Canterbury Times.') The aspect of the grain market for the week ending May 21st, has not altered materially in any respect from that of the previous week. Trade continues quiet, with a moderate amount of business passing through hands. Wheat. —The value of all kinds of wheat remains at previous quotations. Although the English telegrams inform us of a weaker feeling at home, no appreciable effect is noticeable here. Hunter’s White stands at 3s 6d to 3s 7d, and other descriptions from 3s 8d to 3s 9d. Chick wheat has had some enquiry at 2s to 2s 6d according to quality. Oats. —The tone of the market for oats has been daily growing firmer, fid any offering is readily taken at the present quotations. Feed quality commands Is 8d to Is lOd, and best samples of milling realise Is lid to 2s Id. Barley. —Nothing new is observable in this grain. Best quality is quoted at 3s to 3s 6d, but the bulk offering does not command over 2s 3d to 2s 6d, Potatoes. —The market for potatoes has been rather disappointing to growers. The feeling is, if anything, weaker, and prices may be stated at 30s to 32s 6d delivered at railway stations. Flour is quoted at £9 to £lO, according to brand. Grass Seed, —The enquiry has now subsided, and samples are quoted at 4s to ss, according to cleanness of the seed There are few bujmrs, however, for stock at these prices. Dairy Produce is unchanged.
