BEAUTY DISAPPOINTING.
A writer in Progress says : Beauty in a woman is a powerful weapon. We all know what havoc, what transformations and quarrels the favorites of the kings have caused ; then, as in our day, beauty could call a smile to the sourest visage, draw money from the closest pockets, “ make of a strong statesman a purring boy.” Why wonder, then, that it is so frequently turned from its true course. Greater constitutions than those of our sox are shattered by flattery. The beauty is the recipient daily of compliments spoken, and as many more implied. She is courted, sought after, put on a pedestal wherefrom she looks down upon her less favored sisters. Hers is an enviable condition for a time ; then comes the awakening. She is asked to give back that which was but a transitory gift. Rochebume says : “ A woman finds nothing in the world so difficult as accustoming herself to being no longer beautiful when she has once been charming.”
