PRODUCTION OF COAL.

The Manchester City News is a nthority for the statement that the annual consumption of coal in England has been kept for several years at •> fixed figure, if it has not declined. This is accounted for by the fact that great economies have been effected, ch ; efly in connection with the iron trade. Since 1871, the annual saving of coal in the manufacture of pig iron amounted to nearly 5,000,000 tons, and a similar reduction has been effected in other trades. This economy is no doubt due in part to the popular agitation produced years ago by prophecies that the coal-fields would soon be exhausted.
